Stop by Stop, Here's What You'll See

Every stop on this tour has its own personality. Give yourself time to soak it all in, no rushing, no skipping. This is Kerala's slow life at its finest.

🌅
Stop 1 · Start & End Point

Punnamada Lake

This is where your journey begins and where it ends, and it's absolutely beautiful both times. Punnamada is a wide, open lake dotted with tiny little islands in the center. The famous Nehru Trophy Boat Race happens right here every August, you're literally sailing through history.

Glide through the calm waters, breathe in the fresh lake air, and take it all in. You'll want photos from every angle.

💡 Pro tip: If you want to do watersports, kayaking, canoeing, speedboat rides, banana boat, bumper ride, jet ski, or even parasailing, this is your spot! Alleppey Kayaking Club is great for kayaking & canoeing. For the bigger thrills, go with Alleppey Adventures.
🌿
Stop 2 · Through the Pamba River

Into Vembanad Lake

From Punnamada, your Shikara glides through the Pamba River, Kerala's third-longest river, before opening up into the vast Vembanad Lake. Along the banks, you'll see rows of majestic houseboats lined up like floating palaces. You might even catch glimpses of families having breakfast on their private decks. 🍛

Vembanad is no ordinary lake. At 76 km long, it's the longest lake in Kerala, fed by five rivers: the Pamba, Meenachil, Manimala, Achenkovil, and Muvattupuzha.

🦜
Stop 3 · Vembanad Lake

Pathiramanal Island, "Midnight Sand"

Hidden in the middle of Vembanad Lake is Pathiramanal, a magical little island whose name literally means "midnight sand." It sits in the Muhamma panchayat of Alappuzha and feels completely removed from the rest of the world.

The island is famous for its rare migratory birds that fly in from different parts of the world. If you're visiting in June or July, the birdwatching here is absolutely exceptional, something you won't forget easily.

🏡
Stop 4 · Backwater Village Life

Kuppupuram Village

This one surprises every visitor. Kuppupuram is a village in the middle of the backwaters, with a hospital, a school, and everyday life happening all around you. Children going to school by boat, fishermen heading out in the morning, farmers tending the fields. It's a window into a Kerala that most tourists never see.

🌾 Did you know? The paddy fields you see here are 3 metres below sea level. They were created in the 1940s by Joseph Murickan during World War II to fight a rice shortage in Kerala. The three main fields, Chithira (900 acres), Marthandam (652 acres), and Rani (600 acres), are named after the Travancore Royal family. This entire region is Kerala's "Rice Bowl", the legendary Kuttanad.
🦅
Stop 5 · Iconic Photo Spot

Eagle Point

Eagle Point is exactly what the name promises, eagles, right in front of you. This is a short stop that packs a big punch. Dozens of visitors come here every day just to photograph and feed the eagles that soar overhead. Your camera won't stop clicking.

Right next to it is a local restaurant, one of the best spots to take a break, grab some food, and watch the birds from the waterside. Ideal for breakfast in the morning or a peaceful tea break in the evening.

🌄
Stop 6 · Best Views

Village View Point

After Eagle Point, you reach a scenic viewpoint that's absolutely made for photography. The open backwaters stretch out ahead of you, the paddy fields glow green on either side, and if you're on an evening tour, the sunset here is something else entirely. Put your phone down for a moment. Take it in. Then take 50 photos.

🛶
Stop 7 · Hidden Gem

Panakal Canal, Village Life Up Close

This is hands-down many people's favourite part of the whole tour. Your Shikara enters the narrow Panakal Canal inside Kuppupuram village, and suddenly the world changes. The canal is just wide enough for your boat. On both banks, you see:

Kids playing by the water. Fishermen casting their nets. Women washing clothes on the steps. Farmers walking along the banks. Coconut trees leaning over the canal like they're listening in. It's deeply peaceful, deeply real, and deeply beautiful.

📸 This is the only up-and-down journey in the whole tour, you go in and come back the same way. Don't forget to click pictures. This canal is one of those rare places that looks like a postcard from real life.
🏛️
Stop 8 · History on Water

Vilakkumaram Lighthouse Junction

On your way back, you'll pass an iconic historic lighthouse, the Vilakkumaram. For centuries, this lighthouse guided trade boats carrying coir from Alleppey, rubber from Kottayam, latex from Kollam, and spices from Idukki, all headed for ports in Europe and the Arabian countries.

Alleppey's beach and port were once one of Kerala's most important commercial hubs. When the Kochi port rose to prominence, Alleppey slowly stepped back, but the lighthouse still stands, a quiet monument to a glorious past.

🏠
Final Stop · Back Where it All Began

Return to Punnamada Lake

Passing through the Nehru Trophy village stretch, you glide back into Punnamada Lake and return to your boarding point, with a full heart, a camera full of photos, and maybe a little sunburn. That's a good day in Alleppey. 😊

⭐ Our Top Recommendation

Sunset Shikara with Dinner

If you can only do one thing in Alleppey, make it this. As the sun melts into the backwaters, you're on a Shikara with a Kerala feast in front of you. Honestly, it doesn't get better than this. 🌅🍛

🌅

Golden Hour on Water

Watch the sky turn orange and pink as you glide through the backwaters. The reflection on the water is something straight out of a painting.

🍃

Kerala Dinner on Board

A traditional Kerala meal served as the sun goes down, rice, curries, fish, and the freshest coconut-based dishes. Eat like a local, right on the water.

Evening Tea & Snacks

Wind down with hot chai or filter coffee and Kerala snacks, banana fritters or parippu vada, as the stars begin to appear.

🐟 Seafood lover? You can actually buy fresh fish from the shop right there and have it fried on the spot, takes about 10 minutes. Alleppey is a paradise for seafood. Must-tries: Karimeen Pollichathu (pearl spot fish in banana leaf), and Prawn Fry. Seriously good.

A Few Stories That Make This Place Special

🌊 The Longest Lake in Kerala

Vembanad Lake stretches 76 km from Alappuzha to Kochi. It's fed by five rivers and is a Ramsar Wetland of global importance.

🌾 Farming Below the Sea

The Kuttanad paddy fields sit over 3 metres below sea level, one of the few places on Earth where farming is done this way.

🏆 The Nehru Trophy Legacy

Since 1952, the famous snake boat race on Punnamada Lake draws thousands every August. Your Shikara sails the same waters.

⛪ The Abandoned Church

Deep in the C-Block paddy fields stands an old abandoned Chithira Church, a hauntingly beautiful landmark that emerges from the greenery during houseboat rides.

🦅 Eagles of Kerala

Eagle Point is visited daily by large birds of prey. The combination of water, fish, and open sky makes it a natural eagle habitat right alongside tourist routes.

🏮 The Lighthouse Trade Route

For centuries, Alleppey's canal system was a commercial artery, coir, rubber, spices all flowed through these waters to ports in Europe and Arabia.
