Shikara vs Kayaking in Alleppey: Which Is Right for You? (2026)

By Rahul Raj, NIWS-Certified Backwater Guide · Updated June 2026 · 11 min read
Quick answer: Choose a shikara if you want a premium, comfortable experience with authentic Kerala food served onboard — ideal for couples, families, and anyone who wants to relax. Choose kayaking if you want to paddle into the narrowest canals in Alleppey, guided by a certified expert, for a deeply immersive nature experience. If your itinerary allows — do both.
TL;DR

Can't decide? Shikara Dinner Cruise (4–8 PM) is the most unique thing to do in Alleppey. Sunrise Kayaking (₹499) is the most affordable way to experience the backwaters.

Question 1 of 5

Every visitor to Alleppey faces the same question: shikara or kayaking? Both take you onto the backwaters, and both are genuinely wonderful — but they are very different experiences. One is a premium private boat with food served onboard, gliding across the open lakes. The other puts a paddle in your hands and takes you into the narrowest, most hidden corners of the canal network.

I'm Rahul Raj. I'm a NIWS-certified backwater guide and I run both Alleppey Shikara Club and Alleppey Kayaking Club. I want to give you the kind of honest, detailed comparison that actually helps you decide — not just a list of bullet points that says "both are great."

What is a Shikara tour in Alleppey?

A shikara is a traditional Kerala wooden boat — flat-bottomed, open-canopy, sitting right at the water's surface. At Alleppey Shikara Club, every shikara tour is fully private. You are not sharing the boat with strangers. It is your group, your guide, and your experience of the backwaters.

Our boats are premium — cushioned seating, clean interiors, a canopy for shade, and a look that photographs beautifully on the water. I have had guests describe them as the most Instagrammable thing they did in Kerala. But what truly distinguishes a shikara tour here is the food. Every package includes an authentic Kerala meal prepared fresh and served onboard — from appam and puttu at sunrise to a full Sadhya on banana leaf at lunch, to a customisable dinner cruise for couples on the water at golden hour.

We cover the great open waterways of Alleppey — Punnamada Lake, the venue of the Nehru Trophy Boat Race; Vembanad Lake, the longest lake in India; Panical Canal and the village waterways of Kainakary and Kuttanad. You see Alleppey at scale. And you see it in comfort, with someone who knows every bend of it.

What is Kayaking in Alleppey?

Kayaking is a completely different kind of backwater experience — built on effort, immersion, and discovery. You sit in a kayak, paddle in hand, and navigate the narrow canal network that winds through the heart of Kuttanad. These are waterways that no shikara, no houseboat, and no motorised vessel can reach.

Alleppey Kayaking Club tours are led personally by me — and I hold one of the few NIWS certifications for kayaking guides in Kerala. We go small groups only. Every tour includes free professional photography, so your arms are tired by the end but your camera roll is full. The routes take you past paddy fields farmed below sea level, under low bamboo bridges where the palms touch overhead, through villages that have never seen a tourist bus, and into canal ecosystems alive with kingfishers, egrets, cormorants and the occasional otter slipping off a bank.

The canal world kayaking accesses is the one people come to Kerala imagining — fishermen casting nets through corridors of water at first light, women at the ghats, toddy palms reflected in still water. It exists. It is just not reachable by anything larger than a kayak.

"A shikara shows you Alleppey in all its beauty. A kayak takes you inside it — into the places where the backwaters are still completely themselves."

💡 Pro Tip from Rahul

Book the Sunset Dinner Cruise (4–8 PM) for the most romantic evening in Alleppey — a private boat, a Kerala dinner on the water, and a sunset that stays with you. Or start with Sunrise Kayaking at ₹499 — the most affordable way to experience the Alleppey backwaters and the one I recommend to every solo traveller and first-time visitor on a budget.

The canals a shikara takes you to — and where kayaking goes further

This is the part most comparison guides skip, and it is the most important thing to understand about the Alleppey backwaters.

The famous image of Kerala — a narrow waterway with coconut palms arching overhead, fishermen in the early mist, a woman filling water at a mossy ghat — that place is not on the main tourist routes. It is inside the village canal network. And it requires a small boat to reach.

Our shikara tours cover the great waterways of Alleppey. We cross Punnamada Lake, where the Nehru Trophy Boat Race takes place every August. We glide across Vembanad Lake, the longest lake in India. We pass through Panical Canal and visit the villages of Nehru Trophy Village, Kainakary, Kuppapuram, Kuttamangalam — communities where life still moves by boat, where families fish from the banks at dusk, where children wave from the ghats as we pass.

Our kayaking tours go even further inside. The narrowest canals — corridors so tight the palms touch overhead — are only reachable by kayak. We paddle through Kuttanad's paddy fields that sit below sea level, through working fishing villages that see no motor traffic, past roosting egrets and darting kingfishers. Kayaking gets you to the version of the backwaters that most tourists only see in photographs.

Neither experience replaces the other. The shikara shows you Alleppey in its full, beautiful scale. The kayak takes you into its most intimate, unchanged corners.

For couples and honeymooners specifically

Both work beautifully for couples, but in different ways. Kayaking is quiet and intimate — just the two of you paddling through palm-shaded canals at your own pace, with nature all around. The shikara is more indulgent — especially the Sunset Dinner Cruise. That particular experience — a private premium boat, the sun going down over Punnamada Lake, a customisable dinner of Karimeen fry and prawn fry served on the water — is the most romantic thing I know of in Alleppey. No other operator currently offers a private dinner cruise of this kind on the backwaters.

If you have two days in Alleppey, the ideal itinerary for honeymooners is this: sunrise kayaking on day one to see the canals and the wildlife at their most magical, then the Sunset Dinner Cruise on day two for the luxury and the romance. You leave with both.

For families with children

Families tend to love the shikara because children can see everything clearly from an open, stable boat at water level — kingfishers darting, fishermen casting nets, egrets standing in the shallows. The Day Out package's optional activities — kayaking, banana ride, canoeing — give older children something exciting to do alongside the scenic cruising. The tortoise island visit and fishing activity are perennial favourites with kids of all ages.

Families with very young children or elderly parents will find the shikara's comfort and stability easier to manage. Everything is taken care of; you just show up and enjoy.

For solo travellers and adventure seekers

Kayaking was made for solo travellers. You join a small group, you paddle at your own effort, and you come back with a genuine story — not just a pleasant afternoon on a boat. The canals kayaking reaches are the ones that stay with you. I have had guests tell me years later that the narrow canal at 6 AM, with the mist lifting off the water and a kingfisher sitting four feet away from their kayak, was the moment that made the whole trip to Kerala.

Why not do both on the same day?

Many guests combine both experiences and it works beautifully. Join Alleppey Kayaking Club for a sunrise paddle at 6 AM through the narrow canals — the most peaceful two hours you will spend in Kerala. Then board a premium shikara for the Sunset Dinner Cruise at 4 PM for the romance, the food, and the golden hour on the open lake. You get the adventure and the luxury, all in one day on the Alleppey backwaters.

The Day Out Shikara package also includes kayaking as an optional add-on activity, making it easy to experience both from a single booking. We are the only operator group in Alleppey offering both — under the same guide, the same family, the same care for the experience.

Best time for each — month by month

Both experiences are available year-round, but the conditions vary significantly by season. Here is what to expect.

Monsoon
June – September

The backwaters are at their greenest and most dramatic. Prices are lower on both. Heavy rain can limit visibility for photography. Shikara experience is atmospheric and moody — like no other time. Kayaking is manageable in light rain but not recommended during heavy downpours.

Peak Season · Best time
October – February

The best light for photography. Clearest skies, calmest water, lowest humidity. October to February is peak birdwatching season — migratory kingfishers, egrets and cormorants are present in large numbers. The 6 AM sunrise kayaking tour in this period is extraordinary. Book in advance for peak dates.

Summer
March – May

Hot and humid. Kayaking at sunrise (6 AM) is comfortable before the heat builds. The shikara's canopy shade makes the midday and evening tours manageable. Good value season — prices are lower and the canals are quiet. The Sunset Dinner Cruise at 4–8 PM catches the cooler evening air.

Our honest verdict

If you can only do one and you want comfort, food, romance, and a beautiful private experience — choose the shikara. The Sunset Dinner Cruise in particular is something you will not find anywhere else in Alleppey. If you want something active, immersive, and genuinely off-the-beaten-track — choose kayaking. The canals we paddle are the real Alleppey, and a NIWS-certified guide makes all the difference. If you have the time and the inclination — do both. That combination is the full story of the Alleppey backwaters.

Everything travellers ask us

Answered by Rahul Raj, based on years of guiding guests through the Alleppey backwaters.

Is a shikara better than kayaking in Alleppey?
It depends entirely on what you want. A shikara is better if you want comfort, food onboard, no physical effort, and a premium private experience suitable for all ages — especially couples, families and seniors. Kayaking is better if you want adventure, want to paddle into narrow canals that no other vessel can reach, and prefer a deeply immersive nature experience with a certified guide. Both are genuinely excellent, and many guests do both on the same day.
How much does a shikara tour cost in Alleppey in 2026? +
At Alleppey Shikara Club, the Sunrise Shikara Tour starts at ₹3,500 for two people (6 AM–9 AM, includes a traditional Kerala breakfast). The Day Out tour (11 AM–4 PM, includes a full Kerala Sadhya lunch), Sunset Cruise (4–7 PM), and Sunset Dinner Cruise (4–8 PM, includes customisable dinner) are also available. All boats are fully private — the price covers your group exclusively. Contact us on WhatsApp at +91 77369 21810 for current pricing and availability.
How much does kayaking cost in Alleppey in 2026? +
Alleppey Kayaking Club offers the Sunrise and Sunset kayaking tours at ₹499 per person. The DayOut kayaking experience — which includes a traditional Kerala meal — is ₹1,499 per person. All tours are led by NIWS-certified guide Rahul Raj and include free professional photography and life jackets.
Is kayaking in Alleppey safe for beginners? +
Yes. All kayaking tours at Alleppey Kayaking Club are conducted on calm, narrow backwater canals — not open sea or fast water. Every tour is led by me personally (Rahul Raj, NIWS-certified). Life jackets are provided. No prior experience is needed, though basic physical fitness is recommended. The pace is always set to match the group's ability.
Which is better for couples — shikara or kayaking in Alleppey? +
Shikara is the stronger choice for couples, particularly the Sunset Dinner Cruise (4 PM–8 PM) — a private premium boat, sunset over Punnamada Lake, and a customisable dinner served onboard. It is the most romantic experience on the Alleppey backwaters and something no other operator currently offers. Kayaking is also scenic and intimate for couples who want something active. If you have two days, do the sunrise kayaking on day one and the Sunset Dinner Cruise on day two.
Can a shikara enter the narrow canals in Alleppey? +
Shikaras can access many village canals that houseboats cannot — including Panical Canal and village waterways around Kainakary and Kuttanad. However, the very narrowest canals — corridors where the palms touch overhead — are only reachable by kayak or canoe. This is the single most important practical difference between shikara and kayaking tours.
What food is served on Alleppey Shikara Club tours? +
Every tour includes food matched to the time of day. The Sunrise tour: appam, puttu and Kerala curry. The Day Out: a full Kerala Sadhya on banana leaf with rice, sambar, thoran, papad, curd, and Alleppey's famous Karimeen (pearl spot) fry and prawn fry. The Sunset tour: traditional tea snacks including banana fritters. The Dinner Cruise: a customisable menu with Karimeen fry, prawn fry, chapati, vegetable curry and rice — all fresh, all authentic.
Can I do both shikara and kayaking on the same Alleppey trip? +
Absolutely — and many guests do. Book a sunrise kayaking tour (₹499) with Alleppey Kayaking Club in the morning, and the Sunset Dinner Cruise with Alleppey Shikara Club in the evening. The Shikara Day Out package also includes kayaking as an optional add-on. Both clubs are run by the same family from Thathampally, Alappuzha — so it is easy to arrange a combined day through one WhatsApp conversation.
What is the best time for shikara or kayaking in Alleppey? +
Peak season is October to May. October to February is particularly special — clear skies, calm water, and migratory birdlife including kingfishers, egrets and cormorants in large numbers. Sunrise tours in this period offer extraordinary light for photography. Both experiences are available year-round, though we recommend caution for kayaking during heavy monsoon rains (June–September).
Do you offer hotel pickup for shikara and kayaking tours in Alleppey? +
Yes. Both Alleppey Shikara Club and Alleppey Kayaking Club offer flexible pickup and drop across Alleppey town and nearby areas in partnership with Tuk Tuk by Apu, charged separately. The main departure point for all tours is Thathampally jetty, Alappuzha. WhatsApp us at +91 77369 21810 to arrange your pickup.
