About the Alleppey Shikara Boat
A shikara is a traditional Kerala wooden boat, typically 25 to 40 feet long, with all four sides open to let the breeze flow freely. The hull is carved from Anjili wood (wild jackfruit), prized for its natural water resistance. The roof and walls are layered with bamboo sheets and woven palm-leaf thatch — functional Kerala craftsmanship that keeps the interior cool and shaded while giving the boat its distinctive, elegant look.
